The Rocky Mountain Eagle Research Foundation is a non-profit organization with Canadian charitable status, that is dedicated to the study of migrant and resident eagles and other birds of prey in the mountains of Western Canada. In addition to its scientific work, the Foundation is committed to educating people about birds of prey. This will help protect birds and their prey foods and habitats so that future generations may look in wonder at the Eagle Highway . Aims and Objectives - Dynamics of migration
- To monitor daily the movement of Golden and Bald Eagles and other migratory birds of prey at principal and subsidiary observation sites in the Rocky Mountains.
- To develop new observation sites at strategic positions along and across the migration routes.
- To develop detailed maps of migratory routes, between wintering and breeding areas within the Rocky Mountain System.
- To study the movements of individual birds and family groups through banding, marking and telemetry techniques.
- To investigate the factors that initiate and determine the timing of both spring and fall migrations of Golden Eagles.
- To understand the observed annual variance in migration patterns.
- To investigate the effects of short and long-term weather patterns on raptor movement, including the possibility of east to west slope displacement.
- Breeding, Development, and Feeding
- To study long term eagle population trends through yearly monitoring of age classes.
- To investigate the existing and historical relationships between the migratory and sedentary populations of Golden Eagles.
- To study the breeding behaviour of both sedentary and migratory Golden Eagles to determine such factors as home range size, nest location, food utilization and breeding success.
- To research winter range selection by Golden Eagles and their winter feeding ecology.
- To research moult patterns in Golden and Bald Eagles to establish guides for better field recognition of age classes.
- Education
- To educate the general public on the phenomenon of raptor migration.
- To spread knowledge of the value of conserving birds of prey and their habitats and thus help to protect and conserve eagles and other birds of prey on their wintering and breeding grounds as well as along their migration routes.
- To involve young people in the activities of the Foundation through the development of programs in association with schools and youth organizations.
- To involve and train the membership and the general public in monitoring raptor movement.
- To participate in and promote events such as the annual Canmore Eagle Festival throughout the Rocky Mountain area.
- Storing and publishing data
- To store all pertinent field observations in comprehensive computer data banks for future reference.
- To maintain this web site as a source of information and data summaries for the general public.
- To publish results in appropriate scientific and popular journals.
- To publish and distribute a newsletter to keep the membership informed of results and developments.
